Disaster Housing Grants

The rules of FEMA
Once a disaster area is declared eligible for individual assistance, several factors determine who gets money and how much. Flood victims are required to apply for a Small Business Administration loan before anything. If they are eligible, the process stops when the loan is disbursed. But if they are denied an SBA loan they become eligible for individual assistance grants from FEMA.

These grants can be spent on temporary housing or repairs. The amount of awarded grants are based on scope of damage and whether the homeowner has flood insurance. Homeowners with insurance are eligible for them as long as they can prove the grant money will not be spent on items not already paid for by their insurance.

The ceiling on FEMA grants changes every year. In 2007, the maximum amount of an individual assistance grant was set at $28,200.
